Outside, the air felt warmer.

My hands shook as I tried to fix my shoe strap.

Alan walked around the car, pulled a tissue from his pocket, and handed it to me.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” I said.

It was only the second time I had ever heard him speak.

But the certainty in his voice told me everything.

He wasn’t hiding anymore.

That night, I made his favorite dinner.
