And when it was my turn to be remembered, my phone went blank. No messages, no calls. Just the screen on and the night. I’m not looking for applause. I chose this profession and I’m proud of it. But birthdays make it clear what’s missing: sometimes you take care of everyone and, in the end, there’s no one to ask if you got home safe.
