In later years, he continued reflecting on his experiences in both military service and public life. His story was featured in a documentary released in 2017 that explored the legacy of the Vietnam War and how real-life experiences sometimes influence popular culture. Some supporters believed parts of his background helped inspire the fictional character John Rambo in the well-known film series starring Sylvester Stallone. He spent more than four decades living in Sandy Valley near the California–Nevada border, where he wished to remain in his final years.
