A Possibility Neither of Us Expected
My chest tightened.
Tara—Evelyn’s daughter—looked just as shaken.
“I’m not saying this is you,” she said quickly.
“That would be insane.”
“But last night she called you Cal before you even told her your name.”
“And these records were accidentally sent to me with my paperwork.”
She tapped the folder.
“So something about this feels… wrong.”
Or maybe right.

Searching for the Truth
Neither of us wanted to guess.
Guessing would only make things worse.
So we did the simplest thing possible.
We ordered DNA tests.
A week later, the results came back.
I opened the report on my phone.
Under “Close Family Match,” one name appeared at the top.
Tara B. – Sister
My legs nearly gave out.
Meeting Evelyn Again
We visited Evelyn together later that day.
She sat in a recliner near the window, wrapped in a blanket.
Her eyes drifted slowly around the room.
Tara knelt beside her.
“Mom,” she said gently.
“Remember the name you kept saying? Cal?”
Evelyn looked up.
Then she looked at me.
Her expression changed instantly.
Tears flooded her eyes.
“Caleb?” she whispered.
