Gone.
Tears filled her eyes.
But this time… they felt different.
Not heavy.
Not broken.
Just… full.
“Hello,” she whispered softly.
“I’m here.”
Days turned into weeks.
Weeks turned into something more.
What was meant to be temporary… didn’t feel temporary anymore.
He needed her.
And she—
She needed him.
One evening, as she rocked him to sleep, the director sat beside her.
“We found a potential adoptive family,” she said quietly.
Elina’s arms tightened instinctively.
Her heart dropped.
“Oh,” she replied softly.
Silence.
Then the director added:
“But… we wanted to ask you first.”
Elina looked up, confused.
“You’ve already become his whole world,” she continued. “And we’ve seen what he’s become with you.”
A pause.
“If you want to… you can keep him.”
Time seemed to stop.
Elina looked down at the baby in her arms.
He stirred slightly… then settled again, as if he already knew where he belonged.
“Are you sure?” she whispered.
The director smiled.
“We’ve never been more sure of anything.”
Elina closed her eyes.
And for a brief second—
She thought about everything.
The hospital room.
The diagnosis.
The heartbreak.
The emptiness she thought would never leave her.
And then—
This moment.
This child.
This second chance… that didn’t come from illusion—but from truth.
When she opened her eyes again, they were steady.
Certain.
