PART 4 — THE EMPTY LEGACY

Three months later, Diego sat alone in his mother’s mansion, surrounded by unopened baby gifts in blue wrapping paper.

Allison had disappeared the same day as the ultrasound. She blocked every number and left the country. Later they discovered she had been seeing another man — a wealthier one — and had been faking the pregnancy to lock Diego in before Catalina could fight back.

The Rivera family name, once whispered with respect, was now a punchline.

Sophia lost her engagement. Their mother stopped hosting dinners. Old friends suddenly became “too busy.”

Diego drove past the children’s old school sometimes. The teachers looked at him with pity now.

One night, he got drunk and called Catalina’s new British number.

She answered.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Diego whispered, “I lost everything.”

Catalina’s voice was calm, almost kind. The voice of a woman who had already buried that chapter of her life.

“No, Diego. You didn’t lose everything. You threw it away. There’s a difference.”

She hung up.

In the quiet that followed, Diego finally understood the depth of his mistake.

He had chosen a lie over two beautiful, breathing children who had once called him “Papa.”

And now the only thing carrying his family name was silence.
