“Mama?”

I crouched down and looked her in the eyes. ‘Go sit with your little brother, sweetie. I’ll be right there, okay?’

She nodded and walked away, dragging her stuffed rabbit behind her.

I turned the sound back on. “Fine. I’m on my way.”

I cannot hide this from her.

I hung up and called Tessa from the neighbors. She answered after one ring.

‘I need a favor,’ I said.

‘I’m already putting on my sneakers, Paige,’ she replied. ‘Go ahead.’

I didn’t even take the time to change. I quickly grabbed my keys and bag, gave the children a kiss on the head, and ran outside.

The drive was a blur. My hands gripped the steering wheel too tightly. My jaws ached from clenching. Anger sat beside me in the passenger seat.

I need a favor.

When I opened the doors of the office lobby, everything felt too polished, as if clutter wasn’t supposed to accumulate in that place.

Mark was waiting at the reception.

‘They have requested expense claim details,’ he said as I came closer. ‘Hotel bookings. Claims for wellness programs. A number of luxury gifts.’

I swallowed. “All connected to Alyssa?”

“They have tailored everything to her supplier profile,” Mark said gloomily.

“Sms’jes?”

‘Oh yes,’ he confirmed. ‘Expense reports, supplier summaries, even his business phone records. The HR department has everything.’
