Karmelo Anthony sentenced to 35 years in prison for Texas track meet stabbing

The Day Everything Changed

On April 2, 2025, students from multiple schools gathered at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco for a district track and field championship event. What should have been a celebration of athletic competition became the scene of a devastating tragedy.

According to testimony presented during the trial, weather conditions forced many students to seek shelter beneath team tents. Anthony, who attended a different school than Metcalf, reportedly entered a tent designated for Metcalf’s school. Witnesses later testified that students repeatedly asked him to leave.

The disagreement escalated into a confrontation involving Anthony and Austin Metcalf. During the altercation, Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. The wound proved fatal.

Emergency responders rushed to help the injured teenager, but despite efforts to save him, Metcalf died from his injuries. The loss devastated his family, friends, teammates, and the broader school community.

Who Was Austin Metcalf?

Austin Metcalf was a 17-year-old high school student known by friends and family as a hardworking athlete with a promising future. During the sentencing phase of the trial, prosecutors emphasized the life that was taken away and the milestones Austin would never experience.

Family members described him as:

  • A loving son
  • A devoted brother
  • A loyal friend
  • A dedicated student-athlete

His death left an enormous void in the lives of those who knew him. Throughout the trial, emotional testimony highlighted the impact of his loss on his family and community.

Perhaps no one felt that loss more deeply than Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, who became one of the most visible figures throughout the legal proceedings.
