The Secret in the Rice
On the long walk home, she didn’t hold a grudge against her son. She tried to rationalize it to herself: Maybe he really is going through a bad patch… At least he gave me some rice. That’s something, anyway.
When she finally arrived home, she placed the bag on the table. Her stomach burned with intense hunger, and she decided to cook a small portion immediately.
But as soon as she opened the bag, she froze.
There wasn’t just rice inside. Buried within the grains was a carefully sealed envelope.
Her hands began to tremble. She opened it slowly. Inside were 5,000 euros in cash and a quick, hastily written note:
“Mom, forgive me. I lied. I didn’t want my wife to know, because I was afraid she would say I care too much about my parents. Keep this money, buy food, and get whatever else you need right away. I love you very much, but I don’t know how to say it. I am so sorry for not being a good son.”
Madam Rosa stood paralyzed. Tears streamed down her face, wetting the paper. In that single moment, all her sadness and resentment washed away. She understood that her son truly loved her; it was only his circumstances and responsibilities that had made him weak in that moment.
The next day, she used the money to buy groceries. After several days of a cold hearth, the fire in her kitchen was finally lit again, and the comforting smell of steam filled the room.
