It was late afternoon, and a fine drizzle was falling. Madam Rosa walked slowly along a dirt path strewn with stones, leaning heavily on her cane. On her shoulder, she carried an old, worn-out fabric bag containing a few papers and a little money—barely enough to buy a stale baguette.
She was 70 years old, and her legs were trembling, but that day, she had decided she had to go. She needed to see her son, Louis—the son she had raised with all her love and countless sacrifices.
Back home, there had been nothing left to eat for several days. Her body was weakened by hunger. She had no other choice but to ask her son to lend her a little money to buy food.
Louis was now the owner of a successful hardware store. He led a fairly comfortable life: a large house, a shiny car, and every modern comfort. Madam Rosa was convinced that, even though he was a very busy man, he would never let his mother starve.
